What is Pets for Life?
A core program of the Humane Society of the United States, Pets for Life is guided by the philosophy that a deep connect with pets transcends socioeconomics, race, ethnicity and geography, and no one should be denied the opportunity to experience the benefits, joy and comfort that come from the human-animal bond.  The Pets for Life approach is to address the inequity in and lack of access to pet resources that people in underserved areas experience.  This includes providing services through direct care programming but also making a philosophical shift as a field and changing systems of oppression, discrimination and bias.

Did you know?
poverty rates among large U.S. metros, according to the Houston Chronicle’s analysis. Poverty rates measure the percentage of the population living below the poverty line.  Although many believe that having a full-time job with a steady income allows someone to overcome poverty, the reality is that many full-time workers struggle to make ends meet. Indicators that take into consideration more realistic costs of living show that many working families are struggling.
  • One out of three Houston-area households are unable to afford all their basic necessities like housing, food, childcare, health care and transportation
  • One out of four children in Harris County lives in poverty
  • 900,000 Houston-area residents live below the poverty line                           Source: Understanding Houston
